Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that typically erupt when people reach their late teens or early twenties. In a few cases, correctly aligned wisdom teeth do not pose a health complication and serve as an extra set of teeth. However in a majority of cases, the teeth come in misaligned and need to be extracted.
Usually when wisdom teeth grow in horizontally, they can cause damage to surrounding teeth and cause over-crowding. In other cases, wisdom teeth may become impacted -- or may not fully erupt. This partial eruption will break the surface of the gum allowing bacteria to enter around the tooth, and because of their awkward location wisdom teeth are usually more difficult to clean. While having misaligned wisdom teeth is not always an emergency, it is still important to have them properly removed before complications arise.
