Whereas dental implants typically include a screw with a medium sized diameter, mini implants are much narrower and are comparable to a toothpick in terms of width. Because of their smaller size, they are a versatile solution to many situations that may have previously required full-sized implants. It also eliminates the need for major incisions since they can be inserted directly into the gum and bone. When used to secure dentures, mini implants will be placed along the gum line in series and act as the basis for the denture rather than as the actual mechanism for securing an entire tooth. Bone Grafting
Dental bone grafting is done in conjunction with dental implants. To help secure the implant and maximize the outcome of the implant surgery, bones from the patient (autogenous grafts) or harvested from animals (xenografts) are grafted onto the patient's jawbone in order to stabilize the socket and surrounding areas. Generally, this is done at the time of the implant placement and is considered a minimally invasive procedure.
